The frontmost element is a drawing in graphite over / upon ten interlocking (cast one atop others) plaster forms. It came first. Then I realized how little something needs to become, in a sense, another thing.
By themselves, these forms are like sandbags at the lip of a trench. With the drawing (a drawing of my own nose, from a photograph instead of a mirror so as not to be reversed), they are in the place of a mustache. I wore a mustache very like this one the years I was making Whiskers. There is so much drawing, so much line, in this work.
A line of density above a pit, hair sprouting as a feature.
There are things which act to advertise what they protect and vice versa.
