Lashes is in two parts. The base-part is dense, compacted, folded upon itself, wrapped and tied down. Closed. The up-part is both open and closed: a piece of the drapery is missing and the open edges of that hole are joined into a serpentine line, it hangs in deep folds of variable composition, it moves radically more than its support. Overall, the figure is a gesture of reaching out and grasping repeatedly.
While the base-part could almost be read by feel (direction and body), the up-part has a strong visual and contingent aspect (alternating bands of black and white, yellow).
Lashes is the image of two eyes, temporarily near-blinded as by grit in a stiff wind or too much light coming from one side only. One is shut tight against the irritant, the other flapping both to see and to clear.
I wonder about tears missing from this. Is the picture of fluidity (drapery and streaming lines) enough?
